I heard this story about Google ads this morning on NPR, and wondered if it was any indication of a broader trend. Can it mean that web pages and netcasting are starting to take more eyes away from traditional media?

This could be good news for smaller independent publishers, but probably not enough to counteract large mergers and aquisitions in the world of TV, radio and newspapers.

In June last year giants like NBC Universal, Viacom Inc. (which owns CBS), News Corp. (Fox), Tribune Co. and Gannett Company asked the Supreme Court to allow the FCC's new rules to deregulate media. We're still waiting on that decision.

But let's say we end up with one huge corporation controlling all our news and entertainment. Won't the masses eventually get fed up with it and turn to other outlets for more diverse and richer sources?

Will the internet be able to provide people with that? What other new technologies can help fill the void?
