Califia, a proposed model eco-city project for the San Francisco Bay Area, is being developed by the Green Century Institute. The pioneering settlement will combine a revolutionary "arcological" (architecture-ecology) design integrating cutting edge sustainable development and technology resources with community innovations. These innovations include extended family communal housing configurations, new kinds of public facilities and services, advanced power generation and recycling systems, permaculture farms and greenhouses, non-traditional financing and "social capital" programs. Envisioned as a dramatic, integrated complex melding natural environments with dense urban spaces, Califia will be built in phases over a 10 year period. Michael Gosney and Marc Kasky, co-founders of GCI, will discuss Califia at the Be-In's Planet Code Symposium, and will convene a facilitated visioning workshop at the California Institute of Integral Studies on Saturday May 20, 2006 from 1 to 5 pm.

Understanding Our Moment in History: An Interview witih Richard Tarnas:
http://www.scottlondon.com/interviews/tarnas.html

Scott London: You point out that a widespread sense of urgency is tangible on many levels today, as if one historical era is coming to an end and another is about to begin.

Richard Tarnas: Yes, there is a real awareness that things have to change. People are becoming increasingly conscious of the fact that the ecological situation is critical and that we cannot continue to live according to the same assumptions with which we have lived blithely for the past several hundred years. There are also social, economic, and political dimensions to the crisis. There is the unprecedented plurality of perspectives and worldviews and religious and philosophical and political perspectives that are in the air. And, when it comes down to it, there is a spiritual crisis that pervades our world.

I think it affects everybody, but the more informed and thoughtful a person is, the more aware they are of the reality of the spiritual crisis. We live in a world in which mainstream, conventional modern science has essentially voided the cosmos of all intrinsic meaning and purpose. There is no spiritual dimension to it from its point of view. The intellectual power of mainstream modern science has effectively defined what kind of cosmos we live in. And yet human beings aspire for spiritual significance in the life that they lead and in the world that they live in. It is only, I think, though going through a profound inner transformation, and also an intellectual transformation, that one can see beyond that crisis and come into a world of a different kind.

London: There is a lot of talk now about paradigm shifts, about the emergence of new conceptual frameworks and intellectual orientations. Is that what you are talking about?

Tarnas: Very much. We're in what people call the postmodern era. If we are to define what postmodern is, it is in many ways the era between eras. Every era, in a sense, has a worldview that informs its ways of looking at history, at the human being in the world, and so forth. In the postmodern era, our worldview is so fraught with uncertainty that we don't know for sure what is objectively out there. So there is a kind of skepticism about any worldview, about any paradigms. Our postmodern paradigm is, in a sense, "anti-paradigmatic" — it is against the very idea that there could be a compelling, comprehensive Worldview

London: When Thomas Kuhn introduced the idea of paradigms back in the early sixties, he was speaking of them in the context of science. One of the points he made is that young scientists, or people who are new to the profession, tend to be the most important carriers of the new paradigm. Also, a paradigm shift is never really complete until the old guard dies. Are we are seeing the death of the old order?

Tarnas: Yes, very much. I think Thomas Kuhn quoted Max Planck about the idea that a paradigm in science does not shift simply because the evidence in favor of the new one begins to outweigh the old paradigm. It's not a rational, empirical shift. That is because there is so much investment — psychological, unconscious, as well as economic — in the old paradigm by individuals who have lived their whole lives within it. They can't go through that kind of gestalt switch. As Kuhn says, two people who are working within different paradigms are almost, in a sense, in different universes. If you have lived within one long enough and you are not graced with a kind of illumination which helps you break out of the old worldview, it is very difficult to make your way into it.

London: Can you offer any examples?

Tarnas: Oh, sure. There are all kinds of implications of David Bohm's work in physics, for example, or Rupert Sheldrake's work in biology, or Gregory Bateson's work in systems theory. But if you were to read most of the conventional papers or commentaries in physics or biology journals, you would see that one those rare occasions when Rupert Sheldrake or David Bohm come into their discussion, it is with total scorn or rejection, and very little sensitive appreciation for what is actually happening.

That is fairly typical. When Copernicus said what he had to say in 1543, very few people were ready to hear it and it took a generation or two before enough intelligent people were able to marshal enough evidence, and enough other factors — sociological, religious, philosophical, technological (like the coming of the telescope into Galileo's hands) — to bring about a paradigm shift, even though the basic framework of the new paradigm was totally in place and articulated fifty years earlier. So one has to be patient.

Erik's bio:

Erik Davis is a San Franciso-based writer, culture critic, and independent scholar. His book TechGnosis: Myth, Magic, and Mysticism in the Age of Information was released by Harmony Books in the fall of 1998. It has been translated into five languages, and has achieved, in certain circles, the vaguely enviable status of a "cult classic." Davis is a contributing writer for Wired magazines, and wrote "The Posthuman Condition" column for the sadly departed online magazine Feed. His essays have appeared in over half a dozen books, including Zig Zag Zen: Buddhism and Psychedelics (Chronicle), The Disinformation Book of Lies (Disinfo), Prefiguring Cyberculture (MIT Press) and Paul "DJ Spooky" Miller's Sound Unbound (MIT). He has contributed articles and essays to a wide variety of publications, including Bookforum, The Wire, ArtByte, the LA Weekly, Gnosis, and the Village Voice. His articles have been translated for publication in countries ranging from Japan to Brazil to Hungary.

Davis has taught at the California Institute of Integral Studies, the New York Open Center, and Esalen, and was one of the organizers of Planetwork, a conference on information technology and global ecology held in San Francisco in 2000. He has been interviewed by CNN, has popped up on radio shows internationally, and appeared prominently in Craig Baldwin's underground film, the SciFi media critique Specters of the Spectrum. His in-depth studies of the science fiction author Philip K. Dick have been acknowledged by the New Yorker. Davis has also lectured internationally on topics relating to media arts, contemporary electronic music, and spirituality in the postmodern world.

Davis is a fifth-generation Californian, and is currently working with the photographer Michael Rauner on California Visions, a photo-essay travelogue through the Golden State's landscape of alternative spirituality. He is also at work on a short book about Led Zeppelin, and various fragments of bardo fiction.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2002/05/03/MN149517.DTL

Marc Kasky, the San Francisco man who is making mighty Nike quake in its sneakers, says he used to wear Nikes all the time.

He's a jogger and once had quite a few pairs of Nikes in his closet, but that was before he decided the sneaker company was being, well, sneaky.

"I saw something that I thought was wrong, and I wanted to do something about it," Kasky said Thursday in San Francisco. So he sued Nike Inc. in 1998 over its public statements about working conditions in overseas factories. On Thursday, the California Supreme Court ruled that Kasky could, indeed, sue the big sportswear firm.

"I feel very happy about the court's ruling," he said. "It means a company can't misrepresent itself and gain from it."

Kasky is a former marathon runner and a regular jogger along the San Francisco waterfront and on the grounds of Fort Mason Center, where he served for two decades as a top executive for the nonprofit cultural center.

He says he likes Nike shoes, too -- but he stopped buying them about seven years ago, when he began to suspect that the company was being less than honest in its public statements about the working conditions in the overseas shoe factories it deals with.

"Nike makes a very good product," he said. "But we all need to be accountable for our words and actions. Nike has been representing itself as a model corporate citizen, and it was disappointing and discouraging when I began to suspect otherwise."

Kasky, a 58-year-old native of Stamford, Conn., has a long history of environmental, volunteer and community service.

He received degrees from Wesleyan and Yale universities. In the 1960s, he was a volunteer with VISTA, known as the domestic Peace Corps, working to improve a poor neighborhood in Cleveland.

He came to San Francisco in the 1970s and served as president of the San Francisco Ecology Center in North Beach. He later was assistant director and executive director of Fort Mason Center, a collection of educational foundations located at the former Fort Mason army base on the northern waterfront.

In recent years, he has worked as a consultant on a similar conversion of a former military base in downtown San Diego, scheduled to open next year.

Getting money from Nike, he said, was not why he filed the lawsuit in 1998. Kasky does not expect to get anything, and his attorney, Alan Caplan, has worked without compensation on the case for four years.

"The mill does grind slowly, doesn't it?" said Kasky.

Kasky will be gratified if a trial about Nike's claims regarding overseas factory conditions takes place someday.

"I don't know how this is going to be resolved," he said. "But I want to see them try to verify (in court) all the things they said they were doing in their public statements and advertising. If Nike profited wrongfully from its actions, then there should be remuneration."

http://www.worldchanging.com/archives/004297.html

With an increasingly well-documented and articulated global ecological crisis on our hands, turning off the faucet and recycling the newspaper (while fine things to do) are pretty meaningless. The 21st Century does demand that we buy hybrids -- indeed, it demands much more: it demands that we imagine, build and buy cars which ecologically make hybrids look like hummers. It demands a complete redesign of our industrial civilization, from the chemicals we use to the energy we create to the cities we design to the way we deal with water and waste to the buildings in which we live. We are way, way beyond tinkering at the margins here.

So how is it that, in the very same issue which describes Manhattan disappearing beneath the rising waters of a warming world, we also find comments like Halberstadt's?

I think it has to do with vision. Even those of us who get it (who recognize that our civilization is impelled to change itself utterly or be utterly changed by forces beyond our control), and who believe that we can create instead a bright, green future (one which is both more prosperous and far more sustainable than our own) have a damn hard time telling people what such a future will look like. We can't build what we can't imagine, but very, very little good work is being done on imagining and portraying a future exciting and inspiring enough to fight for.

In the absence of such visions, the necessary magnitude of changes to our status quo are simply unimaginable to most people. And if those changes are unimaginable, then can we really fault people (like Ms. Halberstadt, who I've really been unfairly picking on) who still honestly believe that little things will somehow add up to the kind of response we need? I don't think we can. The fault is not theirs, if they have never been shown a better way. We have work to do, I think.

Photograph by Annie Leibovitz

Vanity Fair presents its first “Green Issue,” beginning an “increased commitment to reporting on the threat to our precious environment,” says editor Graydon Carter. The May cover features a quartet of eco–power players, capturing Hollywood glamour and activist passion: Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Al Gore, Julia Roberts, and George Clooney, photographed by Annie Leibovitz. Articles inside address the pressing environmental issues of the day: Mark Hertsgaard reports on the reality of global warming; Michael Shnayerson writes on the Appalachian mountaintop-mining crisis; and a Green Guide offers up 50 simple things you can do in your daily life to help save the planet.

The May Green Issue of Vanity Fair hits newsstands in New York and Los Angeles on April 5 and nationally April 11.

Enabling a Community-Driven Marketplace
for Civic Good

In the context of a growing dominance of large, centralized businesses, an eroding sense of community and connection, failing local economies, and environmental degradation, a group of over 100 visionaries have come together with Dee Hock, the founder of Visa International and Greg Steltenpohl, founder of the Odwalla juice company to enable systemic change. Interra empowers citizen consumers to wield a tool they use everyday—credit and debit cards—to influence how things are made and disposed of, how money circulates within their communities, and how businesses, in general, behave.

Consumers own the power of 70% of GNP, but until now they have not wielded it to better their communities and the world at large.
Consumers can register their existing payment cards or apply for a new Interra card. All cards are connected to a transaction platform that rewards consumers for purchasing from locally owned and sustainable businesses, automates donations to nonprofit organizations, and facilitates connections to like minded members in a self organizing manner. As a result, Interra will:

*	Empower consumers to take back ownership of their communities, improving environmental, cultural, and economic health through their everyday purchasing decisions
.
*	Speed the growth of environmentally and socially minded industry by stimulating conscious consumerism, enabling the “right” products and services to compete, and collecting consumer behavior data that proves consumer interest in buying community regenerative products. This will result in a profound effect on the health of local and global ecosystems—and the people who depend on them—as well as the social standards for how workers are treated

*	Tap into the philanthropic impulse that resides within American culture, creating a new, reliable source of funding for nonprofits

"From my perspective the need for what Interra intends is rapidly becoming overwhelming. If you can devise an organizational concept that in ownership and governance would include both the cardholders and the merchants ... it could be a huge success and constructive alternative to the present situation."

Campsite follows the print-newspaper publishing paradigm, so it structures sites by default as Publications > Issues > Sections > Articles. Campsite works best for medium-to-large-size online news publications, but it is capable of handling nimbler sites too. Throughout his career in academia, business and government he has had a stubborn interest in self-organizing systems and how digital technologies can create new forms of social, political and cultural organization.

Over the last two years, he has been researching and writing about how discoveries in the new sciences such as the neuro-sciences, complexity sciences and evolutionary biology and sociology are transforming our understanding of Human Nature, specifically, the role of trust, reputation, social emotions, and self organization in forming effective forms of social and economic exchange. (Renaissance of the Commons, 2003).

As a part of his interest in studying how spontaneous social networks form and adapt, John has been engaged in the design of networked based organizations whereby decision rights are distributed to the edge of the organization and control is achieved through transparency, trust, and reputation, He is co-founder of the Open Source movement, Social Physics, to develop an open peer to peer platform/browser for the formation and governance of self-organizing social networks and is completing a book for the Command and Control Research Program of the DoD on edge organizations, Operating on the Edge: Meeting Current and Future Security Challenges ( 2004).
ttp://www.energybulletin.net/14492.html

The technology for electrification of transportation is extremely well proven and widely used (more so outside the US) and, from an energy BTU/joule point-of-view, highly efficient. Well-established modes of electrified transportation in use today provide many more freight ton-miles/BTU and passenger-miles per BTU than the competing rubber-tired, oil-burning transportation alternatives.

The ratio in energy efficiency is so great, especially when electrified rail is substituted for "18 wheeler" tractor trailers and single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs), that minimal, if any, expansion of the national electricity grid will be required to reduce U.S. national oil consumption by 10%, or about two million barrels per day.

Electrified transportation is also much more environmentally benign as well. Central power plants are more efficient thermodynamically and their emissions can be more easily controlled. Electric motors are dramatically more efficient than internal combustion engines.

There are three viable electrified modes available in the USA today: (1) urban rail – rapid/heavy rail, high-performance light rail transit (LRT), and streetcars, (2) electric trolleybuses, and (3) electrified inter-city railroad lines (predominantly freight, but with a passenger component).

The US could learn from the French "Grand Strategy" of using domestic nuclear and hydroelectric power to operate electrified inter-city transportation and urban rail. A majority of French towns of 250,000 or more are now getting at least one new tram line.

About YOUTH...
Youth is a remarkably prolific producer, label founder, and collaborator with everyone from Alex Patterson/ORB to Paul McCartney/The Fireman. His labels Dragonfly Records, Liquid Sound Design, and Kamaflage are pace-setting with international dance culture, and his recent Youth in Dub series has brought him back out into performance spaces around the world. Kind of like those years touring as bass player of Killing Joke...
We are preparing to launch the new record label CYBERSET soon, and this event produced by Supperclub is a preview of things to come: B.Smiley is on the label (with Irina Mikhailova), as is Youth and Ricardo (Cyberset is distributing Dragonfly and Liquid Sound Design titles in the US).

I heard this story about Google ads this morning on NPR, and wondered if it was any indication of a broader trend. Can it mean that web pages and netcasting are starting to take more eyes away from traditional media?

This could be good news for smaller independent publishers, but probably not enough to counteract large mergers and aquisitions in the world of TV, radio and newspapers.

In June last year giants like NBC Universal, Viacom Inc. (which owns CBS), News Corp. (Fox), Tribune Co. and Gannett Company asked the Supreme Court to allow the FCC's new rules to deregulate media. We're still waiting on that decision.

But let's say we end up with one huge corporation controlling all our news and entertainment. Won't the masses eventually get fed up with it and turn to other outlets for more diverse and richer sources?

Will the internet be able to provide people with that? What other new technologies can help fill the void?

Open source software, social networks and personal identities, human vs. corporate rights in cyberspace, alternatives to consumer-driven and politicized mass media, the "Digital Divide" between rich and poor and many other vital topics will be in the spotlight at Digital Be-In 13 on May 29, 2004 in San Francisco.
